The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) temporarily suspended the Warri-Itakpe train service for 72 hours following a train engine failure on 9 April 2025 that disrupted services in both directions. The incident began around 1:38 PM and affected the 8:00 AM train from Warri and the 2:00 PM train from Itakpe. Emergency recovery efforts were also delayed due to additional technical issues.
The NRC arranged for the safe evacuation of passengers via road transport, with some passengers choosing to make their own arrangements. The suspension allowed the NRC's technical team to conduct a full audit and address the problems to restore safe operations.
Passengers with affected tickets were offered full refunds or revalidation for future travel. The NRC apologised for the disruption and reiterated its commitment to safety, reliability, and passenger service.
