The Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) has been carrying out compensation payments for the fifth section of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) project from Isaka to Mwanza. The payments are being made to citizens whose family burial sites were acquired to pave the way for the strategic railway project.
The most recent compensation exercise in February 2025 covered various locations, including Puni Ward in Shinyanga District, Bungulwa Ward in Kwimba District, Isemela Ward in Shinyanga Region, and Sigili Ward in Nzega District, Tabora Region. TRC is committed to ensuring that all rightful beneficiaries, whose details were recorded during the valuation process, receive their compensation.
TRC Environmental Officer, Ms. Nelly Mleleu, confirmed that compensation payments have commenced for residents in Tabora, Shinyanga, Simiyu, and Mwanza, who had to vacate their land for the construction of the SGR. She acknowledged the cooperation from local leaders and communities, which has facilitated the smooth execution of the process.
“We appreciate the support from village and sub-village leaders, as well as residents, in ensuring that this exercise proceeds smoothly. TRC remains committed to overseeing the project while adhering to environmental and community safety standards,” said Ms. Mleleu.
Puni Village Chairman, Mr. Jackson Malia, highlighted the significant benefits of the SGR project, noting that it will enhance the transportation of agricultural produce from Puni to other regions, boosting trade and economic growth. He also commended TRC for ensuring that affected residents are fairly compensated.
“The TRC team is ensuring that all affected individuals receive their rightful payments. This project is beneficial not only to our village but also to the entire Shinyanga Region,” said Mr. Malia.
Meanwhile, Puni resident, Mr. Gilbert Mahudi, expressed gratitude to the government for the compensation, emphasising the importance of safeguarding railway infrastructure for the benefit of the entire community.
“The money I have received will be used as directed by my family to construct a grave. We are thankful for the compensation,” said Mr. Mahudi.
The compensation process will continue in other regions where burial sites and other properties were acquired for the SGR project. Under the supervision of TRC, the government remains committed to ensuring that all affected citizens receive their rightful compensation. The willingness of residents to release their land reflects their support for the government’s efforts, led by President Samia Suluhu Hassan, to drive national development.
