Tanzania Railway Corporation (TRC) has taken a significant step to enhance the safety and efficiency of its operations on the new Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) network. Acknowledging the residual risks of accidents caused by technical issues, human error, or sabotage, TRC has added advanced rescue equipment to its fleet to address such challenges effectively.
At the heart of this initiative is the acquisition of a state-of-the-art railway crane, designed by German manufacturer Techne Kirow. Renowned for producing the most advanced railway cranes globally, Techne Kirow has engineered a solution capable of lifting a derailed locomotive back onto the tracks in a single operation, even in challenging, confined conditions.
This crane, with a maximum lifting capacity of 2880 m/t (200 t at 14 m), is set to become the largest and most efficient railway crane on the African continent. It is particularly suited to single-track sections where access and space are often limited, eliminating the need for multiple lifting devices.
In addition to accident recovery, the versatile crane will also support maintenance operations and heavy lifting tasks near the railway tracks, ensuring TRC’s SGR network remains reliable and efficient.
