The African Development Bank (AfDB) and the Central Corridor Transit Transport Facilitation Agency (CCTTFA), in collaboration with the Spanish Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Business, are spearheading efforts to transform Africa’s railway sector. As part of this initiative, a Southern and Central Africa Regional Workshop has been announced, scheduled to take place virtually on 12 February 2025 at 11h00 CAT (09h00 GMT).
This workshop will present key insights from the study, focusing on the challenges and opportunities for railway development in Southern and Central Africa. It aims to serve as a dialogue platform for key stakeholders, encouraging the identification of actionable strategies to develop modern railway infrastructure and services. The workshop also seeks to promote the shift of passenger and freight transport from road to rail, enhancing efficiency and sustainability.
The workshop will explore priority areas for AfDB’s intervention in the region, addressing crucial dimensions such as planning, technical aspects, operational efficiency, and financial strategies. By establishing a structured and sustained framework for support, the initiative aspires to strengthen railway infrastructure, promote regional connectivity, and drive economic growth.
To date, the study has engaged stakeholders from continental, regional, and national entities, ensuring that their perspectives are incorporated into the analysis. Interviews with railway sector representatives across Africa have provided valuable insights, contributing to a well-rounded understanding of the sector’s needs and opportunities.
