Official Launch of Kigali Urban Transport Improvement Project (KUTI) and Burundi-Rwanda Integrated Development Project (BRIDEP) in Rwanda
The Rwanda Transport Development Agency (RTDA), in collaboration with the African Development Bank Group (AfDB), announced the official launch of the Kigali Urban Transport Improvement Project (KUTI) and the Burundi-Rwanda Integrated Development Project (BRIDEP).
These projects, co-financed by the Government of Rwanda, the African Development Bank, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), among other partners, aim to enhance transport infrastructure, connectivity, and economic growth in Rwanda and the broader East African region.
Kigali Urban Transport Improvement Project (KUTI)
Approved in December 2024, this project seeks to improve Kigali’s urban transport infrastructure by upgrading key junctions, promoting non-motorised transport (NMT) facilities, and supporting e-mobility initiatives. The project will commence with the implementation of works at three critical intersections: Chez Lando, Gishushu, and Kicukiro/Sonatubes. This initiative is expected to create approximately 400 temporary jobs during the construction phase, with 30% of these opportunities designated for women.
Burundi-Rwanda Integrated Development Project (BRIDEP)
Approved in October 2024, this regional initiative aims to enhance transport and agricultural infrastructure between Rwanda and Burundi to boost economic resilience and regional trade. With a total financing of USD 413.22 million, the project includes the construction of four asphalt roads totalling 215.3 km, feasibility studies for an additional 406 km of roads, socio-economic impact assessments, and three maritime transport studies to further strengthen cross-border connectivity and development.
Editor’s Note: While these are, sadly, not rail projects, they will have a positive impact on the region. One must start somewhere.
