The Northern Africa Regional Workshop on Transforming the Railway Sector in Africa is scheduled to take place on February 5, 2025, at 09:00 WAT (10:00 CAT).

This workshop is a key component of the Study on Transforming the Railway Sector in Africa, commissioned by the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the Central Corridor Transit Transport Facilitation Agency (CCTTFA), and funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Business. The event will be held virtually on the MS Teams platform, with a link provided in the invitation email.

Objectives of the Workshop

The Regional Workshop will:

  • Present key insights from the Study, focusing on the challenges and opportunities for developing the railway sector in Northern Africa.
  • Serve as a platform for dialogue among key stakeholders to identify actionable strategies for modernising railway infrastructure and services.
  • Promote the shift of passenger and freight transport to rail.

Additionally, the workshop will explore priority areas for AfDB’s intervention in the Northern Africa region, addressing planning, technical, operational, and financial aspects. This approach aims to establish a structured and sustained framework for advancing the railway sector in the region.

Collaborative Efforts and Stakeholder Engagement

This initiative has involved extensive engagement with stakeholders across continental, regional, and national levels. A series of interviews have been conducted to gather representative information on Africa’s railway development, ensuring the Study’s findings and recommendations are comprehensive and relevant.

Invitation to Stakeholders

Stakeholders across member states who have a role or interest in railway transport are encouraged to participate and share this invitation with others in their networks.
