LGV West Algeria: A Major Step Forward in Railway Modernisation

The construction of the High-Speed Rail Line (LGV) connecting Oued Tlelat, Sidi Bel Abbès, and Tlemcen over a distance of 132 km is progressing rapidly. Designed as a dual-track electrified line to accommodate trains travelling at 220 km/h, this ambitious project has already completed 95 engineering structures, including railway and road bridges, as well as two tunnels near Tlemcen (640 m and 150 m in length). The final earthworks and platform preparations are nearing completion, paving the way for the installation of tracks, electrification systems, signalling, telecommunications, and the construction of modern stations in Sidi Bel Abbès and Tlemcen.

This strategic line, intended to serve both passenger and freight transport, is part of a national project aimed at linking Béchar, Tindouf, and Gara Djebilet. It will facilitate the exploitation of iron ore from Gara Djebilet, enabling its transport to Oran for processing and export via the Port of Arzew. Additionally, this project promises to boost the local economy, open up isolated regions, and enhance their tourist appeal through a fast and modern connection.

The National Agency for the Study and Monitoring of Railway Investment Realisation (ANESRIF), acting as the delegated project manager, has played a crucial role by implementing all necessary measures to ensure the steady progress of the works. This project aligns with a vision of sustainable modernisation for Algeria’s railway network. With its significant economic, social, and environmental impacts, the LGV West Algeria represents progress for the western region and a major advancement for the entire country.
