New Trains for Lagos Blue Line

Six additional train sets are set to arrive in Lagos soon, boosting the capacity of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Blue and Red Lines to deliver greater value to commuters and enhance the state’s economic viability. The six train sets, which have successfully passed the factory acceptance test, are scheduled for shipment from China to Lagos.

Strengthening the Blue Line Fleet

The new train sets will be added to the Blue Line’s rolling stock, increasing the number of trips along the corridor. Once phase two of the Blue Line is completed, the trains will be deployed for passenger operations to Okokomaiko.

Phase two, a 14-kilometre stretch from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko, is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2027, with passenger services commencing shortly thereafter.

A Look Back at the Blue Line’s Development

The first phase of the Blue Line, a 13-kilometre rail route from Marina to Mile 2, was inaugurated on 23rd January 2023 by former President Muhammadu Buhari, with passenger operations beginning on 4th September 2023 under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Currently, the Blue Line operates 72 trips daily. With the arrival of three additional rolling stock, the frequency of trips is set to increase, further improving service delivery for commuters.
