Historic Milestone in Ghana’s Railway Development: President Akufo-Addo Commissions Two State-of-the-Art DMU Trains

On a momentous day for Ghana’s transportation sector, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa AkufoAddo, President of the Republic of Ghana, officially inaugurated two cutting-edge Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) trains for operation on the 97-kilometer Tema to Mpakadan standard gauge railway line.

This landmark achievement is a testament to international collaboration and innovation, facilitated by the joint efforts of Polish train manufacturer Pesa SA and Accra-based infrastructure originator and financing company VAOB Group. The two DMU trains, a product of Pesa SA’s engineering expertise and technological sophistication, mark the company’s remarkable debut in the West African market.

This strategic entry reflects Poland’s growing influence in global infrastructure development and signals a new era of cooperation between Polish manufacturers and African economies. VAOB Group, headquartered in Ghana, played a pivotal role in originating and financing the project, ensuring seamless collaboration and the delivery of these world-class trains.

Equipped with state-of-the-art features, the DMU trains provide a superior travel experience for passengers. With spacious, ergonomic seating, ultramodern sensor-operated gates, advanced communication systems, and dedicated emergency exits, the trains exemplify a commitment to safety, comfort, and convenience. Air-conditioned interiors and power outlets cater to modern travel needs, making the journey as enjoyable as it is efficient.

In a ceremonial ride aboard DMU001, the President, accompanied by ministers of state, the High Commissioner of India to Ghana, and other distinguished guests, travelled from the Tema railhead to Afienya, experiencing first-hand the transformative potential of these innovative trains. This project is a critical step in our commitment to enhancing connectivity, boosting trade, and fostering regional integration.

These new trains are not only a triumph for Ghana but also a symbol of the fruitful collaboration between Ghana and our partners, Pesa SA and VAOB Group. Together, we are advancing our railway infrastructure and shaping a more connected future.

For Pesa SA, this accomplishment solidifies its reputation as a global leader in advanced railway manufacturing. “We are proud to introduce our cutting-edge technology to West Africa and contribute to Ghana’s vision for a modernized railway system,” said a representative of Pesa SA. “We look forward to future opportunities to support infrastructure growth across the region.”

VAOB Group’s role as the infrastructure originator and financier underscores the company’s dedication to enabling transformative projects in Ghana and beyond.

“This initiative embodies our mission to drive development through innovative partnerships,” stated the CEO of VAOB Group. “It is an honour to work with global leaders like Pesa SA to deliver solutions that benefit communities and catalyse economic growth.”

This inauguration represents more than just a technological advancement; it signifies a commitment to a future where enhanced transportation strengthens Ghana’s economic landscape, empowers its citizens, and fosters international cooperation.
