
In February 2025, the Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA) announced the appointment of Dr. Frederick Appoh as Acting Chief Executive Officer. With over a decade of international railway experience spanning Africa, Europe, and Asia, Dr. Appoh is a Chartered Railway Systems and Infrastructure expert committed to advancing Ghana’s railway modernisation agenda.
Dr. Appoh has successfully led major railway projects, specialising in system integration, rolling stock modernisation, and operational efficiency. His consultancy experience includes collaborations with Bombardier Transportation, Alstom, Siemens Mobility, Transport for London, Network Rail, and Hitachi Rail. Before his appointment, he served as the Executive Director of RAMS Engineering Ltd, UK.
His vision for Ghana’s railway sector focuses on modernisation, sustainability, and economic growth. Key priorities include enhancing train operations, accelerating Greenfield developments, and improving Brownfield projects to boost connectivity, create jobs, and unlock new economic corridors. By leveraging advanced technologies and international best practices, he aims to position Ghana’s railway network as a critical enabler of industrial and regional development.
Dr. Appoh, a former British Army Soldier in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering (Railway Systems) and an MSc in Reliability Engineering from the University of Manchester, an MBA from Cranfield University, and a BSc in Mechanical Engineering from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. His expertise in safety standards and compliance (EN50126/EN50129) will play a key role in Ghana’s railway transformation.
