Expression of Interest for Potential Private Sector Participation in The Blue Train

The iconic Blue Train, renowned globally for its luxury, has a storied history dating back to 1923. Originating as the Union Limited and Union Express, it connected Johannesburg with mail ships departing from Cape Town to England. Since then, The Blue Train has defined an era of opulent travel, transitioning from steam to electric locomotives in 1955, reflecting both tradition and progress with its seamless blend of elegance and power.

For over 75 years, The Blue Train has been a flagship of Transnet and a treasured South African heritage asset. Currently, Transnet owns and operates the train, with Transnet Engineering (TE) handling maintenance and refurbishment, while Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) provides haulage services and financial support. However, as Transnet’s core business is not in hospitality or luxury travel, managing the train effectively has become a challenge.

Transnet is now exploring private sector involvement and invites interested parties to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI). While submitting an EOI is not mandatory for responding to a potential Request for Proposals (RFP) that may follow, it provides an opportunity for organisations to express their interest in this unique venture.
