A groundbreaking ceremony on 6 January signalled the start - at last - of construction on California's controversial 1,120km, $68 billion high-speed line linking San Francisco with Los Angeles. It is expected to be in operation by 2028. The first segment, in the Central Valley at Fresno, will be 46.
