In a recent diplomatic meeting on 6 November, José Kwassi Symenouh, President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Togo (CCI-Togo), and Ahmed Mohamed Eid Moustapha Ahmed, the Egyptian Ambassador to Togo, discussed the potential for collaboration in vital sectors, particularly agriculture and transport. This meeting marked a step forward in strengthening economic relations and creating mutually beneficial partnerships for businesses in both Togo and Egypt.
During their discussions, President Symenouh emphasised CCI-Togo’s focus on advancing Togo’s transport infrastructure, particularly railway development, as a cornerstone for promoting trade and enhancing industrial growth. He outlined an ambitious project to construct and rehabilitate railway networks, which would facilitate the flow of goods and bolster economic activity. Recognising Egypt’s established expertise in infrastructure, he suggested leveraging Egyptian know-how to support this significant undertaking.
President Symenouh also highlighted the importance of agriculture, specifically the rice sector. He introduced a transformative project designed to enhance the production, processing, and marketing of local rice, thereby contributing to Togo’s food security and moving towards self-sufficiency. This initiative includes the potential establishment of an agricultural bank to facilitate farmer access to financing and make agricultural credits more affordable.
Egypt’s Commitment to Strengthening Economic Ties
Ambassador Ahmed reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to consolidating economic ties with Togo. He detailed how Egyptian companies, particularly in agri-food, infrastructure, textiles, and juice production, are already contributing to the Togolese market. Highlighting Egypt’s ongoing interest in expanding trade and investment, he noted the willingness of Egyptian companies to build lasting partnerships with Togolese firms, bringing in expertise and sharing best practices to enhance competitiveness.
The ambassador underscored the economic pillars underpinning Egypt-Togo relations, with a focus on economic cooperation. Egyptian companies are eager to explore opportunities within Togo’s favourable business climate and strategic location in West Africa, positioning Togo as a crucial partner in the region.
A ‘Win-Win’ Partnership
Dr. Symenouh characterised the meeting as a positive step towards a “win-win” partnership, where both countries could achieve shared economic goals. He stressed CCI-Togo’s commitment to fostering a collaborative environment where Togolese and Egyptian companies could benefit from each other’s strengths. This meeting also provided an opportunity for both leaders to align on significant projects in transport and agriculture—sectors integral to Togo’s economic growth and development.
In recent years, Togo and Egypt have solidified their partnership through agreements in energy, urban planning, housing, sanitation, and culture. These agreements are part of a broader effort to deepen cooperation and create robust platforms for economic collaboration, aligning with Togo’s vision of development and growth through strategic international partnerships.
This meeting between CCI-Togo and the Egyptian embassy signifies a forward-looking approach to economic diplomacy, opening new doors for Togolese and Egyptian operators to build sustainable, competitive, and economically beneficial relationships.
