Railways AfricaTM
Issue: 4 - 2015
In Railways Africa issue 4 of 2015, we get an in-depth view of the tender to be issued this November by the Bombela Concession Company, for the supply of 12 new Gautrain trainsets.
We interview Transnet Programme Director Wilson Mogoba regarding the imminent construction of the new Swazi Rail Link. Planned for 20-ton axle load (general freight standard), this is intended to divert other-than-coal traffic using the Ermelo to Richards Bay line, permitting the latter’s almost exclusive dedication to the movement of coal.
We speak with Kenya Railways Corporation Infrastructure Engineer Jonathan Kilelo about construction progress on the new Mombasa to Nairobi standard gauge railway. Initially linking Mombasa and Nairobi, eventually it is intended to extend to Kampala in Uganda, Kigali in Rwanda, Bujumbura in Burundi and Juba in South Sudan.
We explore the continuing saga at the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) as Public Protector Thuli Madonsela releases her findings.
And Professor Hannes Gräbe gives us more insight into the Transnet/ University of Pretoria collaboration, and the railway-specific training offered at the university.
